How to plan a strategy to prepare for English Section of SSC CHSL Exam 2017?

English Language is a phobia for some candidates who are aspiring for SSC CHSL Exam. It becomes a hard nut to crack for them as this exam is mostly chosen by the undergraduates. Undergraduates are not that familiar with the advanced phrases and words. It becomes a hurdle in their way of understanding the English scripts and sentences. But those who are not good in English or comfortable with the advanced usage of English language can still think of scoring well. It is one of the scoring subject and one can accomplish that by following a proper strategy. Let us discuss some essential tips to follow to prepare for English Section.

Grammar is usually the most important aspect of any language skill. However, it also takes time to improve and build an intuitive intelligence on grammar.

The English section of SSC CHSL Tier 1 Exam has 25 questions. These 25 questions carry 50 marks. This section is divided into two parts one is comprehension which is of 10 marks and 20 marks for vocabulary and grammar.  One should give importance to grammar and reading comprehension by following certain regular habit of practicing grammar rules.

Question – wise strategy for English Section

  1. Reading Comprehension Section
Many applicants think that reading comprehension is very time consuming and try to avoid this question.   Nevertheless, the passages asked in SSC CHSL are easy and can be answered fast. One can achieve success in attempting this section by developing a habit of reading to gain speed. This practice of reading fast will enable you to read the passage quickly and save time. Besides saving time one can easily score 10 marks. You do need to memorize any formulae or facts to master reading comprehension based questions.
  1. Learn Synonyms, Antonyms and one word substitution:
It is generally observed that students do not give much importance to vocabulary section. With the result they face lot of problems to score well in English section. It is advisable to improve your vocabulary by taking the help of renowned word power books such as ‘Word Power Made Easy' by Norman Lewis. It is very easy to prepare for topics like synonyms, antonyms, one-word substitution and idioms and phrases as these are repeated again and again. Practice them by solving previous year question papers to learn the frequently asked questions. Besides solving these questions you can master them by making a separate list of new words that you come across while reading articles. This list will work as a ready reckoner before one or two days of the exam.

  • Spotting Error
In this question one has to find the grammatical error in the given sentence, which requires good knowledge of grammar. There are four to five questions expected to come in SSC CHSL exam 2017. Learn and understand the grammar rules and practice extensively.

How to solve Spotting Error in exam?

(i) To solve questions on spotting errors, first of all read the complete sentence carefully and try to detect the error.
 (ii) Read the complete sentence carefully to check the subject-verb agreement.
(iii) In case you are not able to detect the error or you are still unsure of the correct answer. Then read each individual part of the sentence and strongly examine which part consists of a
  • Fill in the blanks
In this Exam generally single blank fill in the blanks questions are asked.

How to solve this type of Question in exam?

 (i) Read the given sentence carefully and choose the word from the options depending upon the subject being discussed.
(ii) Apply the technique of elimination by concurrently checking which of the options best satisfies both the entries.
(iii) It is better to ensure that the word you have chosen for the blank enables to read the sentence well and accurately.

  • Sentence Correction:

In this question one has to find the correct alternatives which will improve the sentence. In some questions there is no correction required then your answer will be no improvement.

How to solve Sentence Correction in Exam? 

(i) Read the sentence carefully and spot grammatical errors by analyzing whether it is correct or not.
(ii) Always analyze each option.
(iii) In case you find that the original sentence appears to be fine, pay attention to the grammar that it tests and look through the choices systematically to see if any option provides a better alternative.
(iv) The moment you have located the error eliminate the rest of the options and mark the appropriate one
(v) Do not re-read the option shortlisted or else you will waste your time unnecessarily.
